Municipal Election 2025
The 2025 General Municipal Election took place on October 20, 2025, in Hinton, Alberta, Canada. Below are the unofficial results for Mayor, Councillors, and the Recreation Centre Modernization Vote.
Mayor and Councillors
The results of the Town of Hinton General Municipal Election are as follows. They are considered unofficial until noon on Friday, October 24, 2025.
The mayor and councillor candidates with the most votes in the table below are considered unofficially elected.
Recreation Centre Modernization Vote

2025 Election Timeline and Key Dates

Legislative Changes
On October 18, 2024, Municipal Affairs proclaimed the Municipal Statutes Amendment Act, which made several amendments to the Local Authorities Elections Act (LAEA) and the Municipal Government Act (MGA). The amendments related to municipal elections came into effect on October 31, 2024.
- Automated Voting: Prohibited.
- Campaign Contributions: Union and corporate donations are permitted.
- Campaign Limits: Alberta-wide limits introduced.
- Councillor Training: Orientation training is now mandatory.
- Criminal Record Check: The Town of Hinton passed Election Blaw 2004 on December 3, 2024, which states that any person seeking to be nominated as a candidate will be required to provide a criminal record check pursuant to the LAEA.
- Electors Register: Municipalities must create a Permanent Electors Register in partnership with Elections Alberta.
- Nomination Period: Extended from Jan. 1 to Nomination Day (Sept. 22, 2025).
- Recall Petitions: Validation responsibility is transferred to the Minister.
- Special Ballots: Expanded application eligibility for electors unable to vote at Advanced polls or on Election Day.
- Third-Party Advertising: Registration and financial disclosure required; capped at $5,000.
- Voter Identification: Vouching is allowed only for addresses.
Information for Candidates
Form of nomination; section 27 (LAEA) lists all requirements every nomination of a candidate must adhere to. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure accuracy of nomination. Voter Eligibility
In accordance with section 47(1) of LAEA, a person is eligible to vote in an election if the person
- is at least 18 years old,
- is a Canadian citizen, and
- resides in Alberta and the person's place of residence is located in the local jurisdiction on election day
Get Ready to Vote
If you registered to vote before September 15, 2025, and your name and current address is on the permanent electors list, you will be asked to produce one piece of government issued ID that contains your photo.
If you are not on the permanent electors list, you will be asked to make a statement that you are eligible to vote and produce one piece of government issued ID that contains your photo and current address.
If your government issued photo ID does not include your current address in the Town of Hinton, you will have to prove you live in Hinton by showing your photo ID along with one piece of approved voter identification. See list here.
If you do not have the required ID, a registered voter can vouch for you at the voting booth. Necessary forms will be provided at the voting booth.
Still have questions? Bring identification to the advance polls on October 4 or 16; or on Election Day Monday, October 20, 2025 and a Deputy Returning Officer will assist you.
Voting Time for Employees
Per section 58(1) of LAEA, an employee who is an elector shall, while the voting stations are open on election day, have 3 consecutive hours for the purpose of casting the employee's vote.
- (2) If the hours of the employee’s employment do not allow for 3 consecutive hours, the employee’s employer shall allow the employee any additional time for voting that is necessary to provide the employee the 3 consecutive hours, but the additional time for voting is to be granted at the convenience of the employer.
- (3) No employer shall make any deduction from the pay of an employee nor impose on the employee or exact from the employee any penalty by reason of the employee’s absence from the employee’s work during the 3 consecutive hours or part of it.
- (4) Subsections (1), (2) and (3) do not apply if the employer provides for the attendance of an employee who is an elector at a voting station while it is open during the hours of the employee’s employment with no deduction from the employee’s pay and without exacting any penalty.
Institutional Voting
Institutional voting will be offered at the Hospital Ward, Hinton Continuing Care Centre, and Pine Valley Senior Citizen Lodge specifically for those who are unable to, or may have difficulty, traveling to the voting booth. Information is available at each location.
Special Ballots
If you are unable to vote during the Advance Voting on October 4 and 16, 2025 or during Election Day on October 20, 2025 due to extenuating circumstances please email Legislative Services at legislativeservices@hinton.ca requesting a Special Ballot Package. The Special Ballot application deadline is October 15, 2025, at 4 pm. Any requests received after this point will not be accepted.
