[ARCHIVED] January is Alzheimer's Awareness Month

Alzheimers Awareness Month

During the month of January, Alzheimer’s Societies across Canada encourage individuals, organizations, and communities across the country to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

During January, Alzheimer’s Societies across Canada encourage individuals, organizations, and communities across the country to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Approximately 50,000 people in the province of Alberta are living with some form of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease making up almost half of those diagnosed; close to 772,000 Canadians are living with some form of diagnosed dementia.

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is life-changing for the person with the disease, as well as their family and friends, but information and support are available. No one has to face the journey of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia alone.

Awareness is the first step to fighting stigma, reinforcing human rights, and building more dementia friendly communities. By understanding what people living with dementia experience in their day-to-day lives, their struggles, as well as their hopes and successes, we can work together to better meet the needs of those living with Alzheimer’s and those who partner in their care.

The Town of Hinton recognizes the importance of partnering with agencies like the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, healthcare, seniors housing, and care partners to those living with Alzheimer’s disease.

Blue is the colour that symbolizes the movement to bring awareness to Alzheimer’s disease. In recognition of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and in support of community members impacted by all forms of dementia, the West Fraser Guild, as well as the Green Square Visitor Information Centre, will shine bright in blue for January.

You can find out more information about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias by accessing and sharing resources available from the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories at https://alzheimer.ca/ab/en or by calling 1-866-950-5465.

Hinton FCSS has a wide variety of Alzheimer Society brochures and resources available for those looking for more information, or you can contact our Community Dementia Ambassador by calling 780-865-6036.
