National Drowning Prevention Week takes place July 16-22, and the Aquatics team at the Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre have organized a variety of fun and educational activities for the community.
At the Regular Council Meeting on July 4th, Deputy Mayor Maguhn declared that July 16th - 22nd is National Drowning Prevention Week on behalf of Mayor Michaels. Watch the declaration on YouTube from minute 2:53:14 - 2:54:33 to listen to the proclamation.
National Drowning Prevention Week is the Lifesaving Society’s annual drowning prevention awareness event. With over 400 Canadians drowning in preventable water-related incidents annually, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death among Canadians under 60+ years of age. But even one drowning is too many.
Sunday, July 16, is themed The Drowning Problem. At the Rec Centre there will be a chance to complete the Safe Swimmer Pledge for entries into a raffle, pick up a Water Smart activity book, and take part in a Water Smart Safe or Sorry game.
