Growing Guards is an Aquatic Recruitment program.
Can you swim (even just a little bit)?
If so ... You’re in luck!
The Town of Hinton Aquatics Service Area is holding a recruitment program this winter to fast-track you to becoming an Instructor Guard.
Aquatic Trainees will be given the opportunity to complete all of the important lifeguarding training at no cost, including:
- CPR Level C and AED
- Bronze Medallion
- Bronze Cross
- Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid and CPR-C
- National Lifeguard (pool)
- Lifesaving Swim Instructor

- December 5, 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. @ Meeting Room
- December 9, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. @ People Centre
- December 11, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. @ People Centre

Application Process
Submit resume and cover letter to recruitment@hinton.ca. Applicants will go through a pre-screen interview and a formal interview.
Required Lifeguarding Training
- CPR Level C
- Bronze Medallion
- Intermediate First Aid
- Bronze Cross
- National Lifeguard
- Swim and Lifesaving Instructor
Covers all aspects of CPR skills and theory for adult, child, and infant casualties, including two-rescuer CPR skills. CPR-C includes an introduction to the purpose of an AED and how they are used
Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.
Physicals:
- Rescue Drill – 25 metre Swim, carry victim/manikin 25 metres
- Endurance Challenge – 400 metres within 12 minutes
- Rescue non-breathing victim – rescue of a non-breathing victim located at the surface in deep waters. Remove and perform CPR on a manikin.
Intermediate First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR.
This course is for those who want an in-depth understanding of first aid, such as:
- medical/legal aspects,
- spinal injuries,
- heat or cold injuries,
- bone and joint injuries,
- abdominal and chest injuries,
- burns,
- medical emergencies.
Bronze Cross marks the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for the responsibilities of assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership certification programs.
Fitness items:
- Endurance challenge
- 400 metres within 11 minutes
- Spinal Injury Management
- Respond to a breathing or non-breathing suspected spinal-injury victim located in shallow water or on land.
- Object recovery
- Swim 15 metres and surface dive to recover a 10-pound object; surface and carry the object 5 metres.
The National Lifeguard program develops the basic lifeguarding skills, principles, and decision-making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies. The National Lifeguard program cannot, in theory or practice, prepare candidates for every situation that might occur.
Fitness items:
- Endurance challenge
- 400m in 10:00 minutes
- Spring Challenge
- 50 metre sprint in 60 seconds
- Object Recover
- Swim 15 metres and surface dive to recover a 20-pound object; surface and carry the object 5 metres
Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life® and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. (Swimming Lessons) Lifesaving Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medals, Distinction, Boat Rescue and Lifesaving Society CPR programs.
