Business Licence
For a business to operate in Hinton – regardless of whether the business is based in Hinton or not – it must have a Hinton business licence.
What is a business?
It’s an operation that sells goods or services. A business may be home-based, commercial or industrial, regional, considered a hawker/peddler, a prime or principal contractor with more than three sub-trades, or a temporary operation.
So, whether you are a sole proprietor or operate a larger business that employs others, a business licence is required to operate within the Town of Hinton.
Renewing a business licence
Business licences expire on December 31 and are automatically renewed. Watch for your business licence renewal invoice at the beginning of December each year. According to the Business Licence Bylaw 1126, fines will be issued for unpaid invoices.

Why do I need a Business License?
The Government of Alberta, through the Municipal Government Act, provides municipalities with the authority to establish a system of licensing for businesses, business activities and persons engaged in business. Business licensing bylaws are enacted to protect public health and safety, and a Business Licence serves as a confirmation that a business complies with local laws and regulations.
All businesses operating within the Town of Hinton are required to obtain a Business Licence as per Bylaw 1126. This also includes businesses that are not from Hinton but performing work within Hinton.
