In 2018, the Town of Hinton approved the replacement of Maxwell Lake Bridge. The pedestrian bridge was slumping into the wetland, structurally compromised and no longer safe for public use.
The old bridge was removed in September 2018 and the new bridge was installed in February 2019. It was designed to accommodate those with mobility aids and support equipment for boardwalk maintenance. The new bridge is also higher above Maxwell Lake to account for year-to-year water level fluctuations of the lake.
The bridge replacement timeline was extended into early 2019 due to higher than usual water levels and to reduce environmental impacts. Replacing the bridge in autumn would have disrupted the local beavers that were collecting and stockpiling food for the winter.
In March 2019, following a request by the Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas, excess gravel was removed from the trail leading to the bridge. Temporary steps were then installed to support pedestrian access to the bridge. Associated Engineering and Robson Design Build Ltd. subsequently installed steel screw piles, timber boardwalk, ramps, viewing platforms and handrails to re-establish trail connectivity to the bridge.
This fully grant-funded project was completed in April, 2023 and continues to support recreational and educational activities around Maxwell Lake.
