Hinton Arena, later named after Bill Thomson, had its first skaters in December of 1965. Developed later, the Recreation Centre itself was officially opened on March 1st, 1982, and renamed to honour the late Dr. Duncan Murray in 1988. A year after it was opened, the Library moved into the facility from its previous home in Harry Collinge High School.
