UPDATE 3: Bridge Out - Maxwell Lake Pedestrian Bridge Project

Please be advised that there will be increased activity in the Maxwell Lake area of the Beaver Boardwalk as crews begin installation of the Beaver Boardwalk bridge (located south of Maxwell Lake apartments).

The bridge installation is scheduled before the end of this month, and access to the area has been blocked until that time. The public is asked to follow all signs and not enter the area. Please plan an alternate route while enjoying the boardwalk.

Due to higher than usual water levels and environmental challenges, the Beaver Boardwalk bridge replacement timeline had been adjusted to winter 2019. Moving forward with the bridge replacement at an earlier time would have disrupted the beavers in the area, as they were building their food supply for winter survival.

Project Background

To provide our community with further information on the ongoing Maxwell Lake Bridge Project, we have compiled important information into one CivicSend.

This notice has been updated a third time to change the date of construction commencing due to weather realities.

Project Location: Maxwell Lake Bridge
Construction Budget:  $400,000.00
Construction Time Frame: February 2019
Note: The construction of this project will subject to weather considerations and season.

Please see below for a map showing construction area:

Closed Area

Scope of Work

The Scope of Work (SOW) is the area in an agreement where the work to be performed is described.

The Scope of Work (SOW) to be performed is as follows.

  • Remove and dispose of existing pedestrian bridge;
  • Supply and install new bridge and footings; and
  • Landscaping for trail connection and bridge access.

Project Understanding:

The Town of Hinton as approved the replacement of the Maxwell Lake Bridge in the 2018 Town of Hinton Capital Budget. The existing pedestrian bridge is slumping into the wetland and is structurally compromised and no longer safe for public use.

The new bridge profile is raised higher to support the water flow changes in the Maxwell Lake from year to year. The bridge has been designed to support and enable those with mobility aids to access the bridge. The bridge design supports equipment for boardwalk maintenance by Town of Hinton in areas that were not readily accessible throughout the year.

Project Partners:

From conception through to construction completion, the Town of Hinton and ISL Engineering and Land Services, work in partnership to design, engineer and deliver a project on schedule and budget. Sure-Seal, the General Contractor, is the successful bidder for this project and will be carrying out the scope of work

Construction Factors:

While we seek to minimize interruptions at the Beaver Boardwalk, there may be some construction related noise and inconveniences during the course of work. We apologize for any inconvenience this disruption may cause.

During construction the area of the previous bridge will remain closed in both directions. Community members and visitors are being asked to take alternate routes and follow the safety directional signage in place.

We would like to thank you in advance for your patience and co-operation.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Planning and Development directly on the matter.
