Tie Camp Creek/RC Flyers Prescribed Burn Complete

The following information was shared to the Town of Hinton by Provincial representatives of the Edson Forest Area.

UPDATE: Crews were able to successfully burn sections of the grass hazard in the eastern most field.

They will not be burning over the weekend but will look for opportunity in the next few weeks.

Previous Release

There is the possibility for conditions well suited to a hazard reduction burn in the area of Tie Camp Creek, locally known as RC Flyers. Crews are currently engaging in test burns evaluating conditions, and hazard burns may commence should these tests prove successful.

The intent of the prescribed fire is to burn off the buildup of heavy matted dry grass and other fine fuels before camping season and thereby protect the adjacent forest and nearby subdivision of Carldale.

The proposed burn will target removal of grass fuels in the more heavily used areas and will mitigate some of the risk of ignition from irresponsible public usage observed in the past.

The work will help reduce the fire hazard in the area by burning off dead grass, and completing this action as early as possible should give the site a chance to green up before campers arrive.

Operations will only commence when forecasted weather and on-the-ground conditions permit. Crews with the Edson Forest Area will only proceed where and when they can ensure a safe operation that will meet the overall objectives of the prescribed fire. The entire burn project, from guard burning to mop-up, will take less than four days as crews burn the area in sections starting with the third field.
