Junior Hockey Returns to Hinton: Welcome Hinton Canadians to the AEJHL
July 29, 2025
The Town of Hinton is proud to welcome the Hinton Canadians to our community as the newest team in the Alberta Elite Junior Hockey League (AEJHL).
Launching their inaugural season this fall, the Canadians will bring high-level junior hockey, meaningful community involvement, and a renewed energy to the Bill Thomson Arena at the Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre.
The AEJHL identified Hinton as a strong location for league expansion based on the community’s passion for hockey and past support of Junior programs.
“We’ve spoken with many local residents and businesses, and the response has been incredible,” says Mike Renner, Team Owner, General Manager, and Head Coach of the Hinton Canadians. “It’s clear that Hinton is ready for hockey again, not only as a sport, but as a source of community pride and economic activity.”
Mayor Nicholas Nissen echoed this enthusiasm, stating:
“The return of Junior hockey to Hinton is about more than just the game; it’s about bringing people together, creating new traditions, and boosting local pride. The Hinton Canadians will help foster connection and belonging through the shared experience of local elite hockey. We’re excited to see the positive ripple effects this team will bring to our community, our businesses, and our young athletes.”
The arrival of the team is expected to create positive economic benefits for local businesses, boost tourism during game weekends, and provide new volunteer and sponsorship opportunities for residents.
Inspired by the rich tradition of one of Canada’s most iconic NHL franchises, the Hinton Canadians' name was chosen to reflect a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and pride.
“We hope to bring that same level of pride and performance to our own organization and to the community,” says Renner.
While the focus remains on excellence on the ice, the Hinton Canadians are equally committed to making a meaningful impact off the ice. As members of the AEJHL, the team strives to uphold the league’s high standards through both competitive performance and community engagement. Players will volunteer at local schools, food banks, and events, and will also support minor hockey by participating in practices and offering mentorship when invited. The team is eager to become an integral part of Hinton’s social and recreational fabric.
A pre-season community BBQ and team meet-and-greet event is also in the works, featuring bouncy castles, face painting, giveaways, and an opportunity to connect with players and coaches before the season begins.
The AEJHL is a high-calibre Junior A league for players aged 16 to 21, emphasizing player development, competitive play, and integrity. The Hinton Canadians’ 2025–26 season will include 21 regular-season home games, with the home opener set for September 27, 2025, against the Northern Alberta Lightning.
A prospect camp will be held August 16–17, 2025, in Edmonton, with additional information to be shared on the team’s social media platforms. A new team website is also in development, which will include game schedules, ticket sales, and contact information. In the meantime, those interested in season tickets, sponsorships, or volunteering can connect with the team directly by email at hintoncanadians@gmail.com.
