Update: Beaver Boardwalk Rehabilitation Project

January 21, 2024

The Town of Hinton and the Beaver Boardwalk Community Oversight Committee (BBOC) are excited to share that construction is underway at the Beaver Boardwalk. Please keep in mind all construction within the wetland must be conducted under frozen conditions, so the timelines associated with this project are fluid and weather-dependent.

What’s Happening Now?

  • Activity at Reimer Drive: If you’ve passed through the Reimer Drive area, you may have noticed some work underway. Contractors are using this green space as a staging site and placing special matting to protect the surrounding wetland.
  • Environmental Oversight: An environmental scientist from Associated Environmental is on-site to ensure that everything done in the project meets strict environmental standards.
  • Vegetation Management: Contractors will carefully thin or remove vegetation within 8 feet of the Boardwalk in sections U, V, and part of P. This work is necessary to provide safe access for reconstruction activities. Rest assured, environmental consultants have thoroughly reviewed all vegetation management and fully comply with our Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEP) Water Act approvals, ensuring minimal impact on the natural surroundings.

How to Stay Safe During Construction

  • Please follow detour signs and respect any temporary closures.
  • If an area is fenced off, we kindly ask that you avoid entering to keep everyone safe.

What’s Next?

  • Maxwell Lake Staging Area: Another work site will soon be set up near Maxwell Lake Apartments at the gravel trail entrance at the end of Sutherland Avenue. While the staging area may temporarily impact access in this spot, we’re excited to share that once the work is complete, recreation users at the Boardwalk will enjoy a less steep and more user-friendly trail thanks to the addition of extra gravel.
