We Want Your Feedback:
Drinnan Way Train Whistle
January 6, 2025
Train whistles play a vital role in safety, warning drivers and pedestrians of oncoming trains. In Hinton, the train whistle sounds at the Drinnan Way Rail Crossing, located near the intersection of Highway 16 and Drinnan Way on the east side of town. With trains travelling through this area at speeds up to 96.5 km/h, safety remains the top priority.
Recently, the Town has been exploring the potential to cease train whistle use at this crossing. However, meeting the necessary safety requirements would involve:
- Hiring a consultant to assess safety measures (estimated between $10,000–$25,000).
- Installing 1.6 km of fencing (estimated $160,000).
- Upgrading the crossing’s warning system (estimated between $100,000 and $750,000, depending on the consultant’s recommendations).
Please share your thoughts by completing our Drinnan Way Train Whistle Survey. Your feedback will help the Town better understand the community’s perspective and make informed decisions.
