National Drowning Prevention Week: July 16 - 22July 18, 2023 Boating Safety:Choose It. Use It. Always wear a Lifejacket. Your lifejacket is your best friend on the water, just like a seatbelt is in a car. Remember these key messages to stay safe while boating:- Lifejackets do not work if you do not wear them. Not wearing a Lifejacket was a factor in most boating deaths. Don't take risks - wear your lifejacket!
- Lifejackets are for everyone, regardless of age or swimming ability. Even strong swimmers should wear lifejackets. They're there to help you in case of the unexpected.
Get Trained:- Take your boating safety course and obtain your Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Get the training you need to navigate the waters safely and responsibly.
Be Prepared:- Before you go boating, check the weather forecast and learn about local hazards. Always have a boat safety kit on board and ensure your boat and accessories are in good condition.
Here are some additional safety tips to keep in mind:- STARTboating®: Explore the national program from the Lifesaving Society designed to educate new boaters on the basics of safe and responsible boating.
- Never Alone: Avoid boating alone. Boating alone increases the risk of boating-related fatalities. Bring a buddy and enjoy the water together.
- Watch out for Others: Be aware of swimmers and other boaters. Always have a spotter when towing water skiers and tube riders.
- Choose Appropriate Boating Equipment: Ensure your boating equipment suits the season and conditions.
- Inflatables Safety: Use caution with inflatables. They can obstruct views, float away, and take people further out than intended. Limit their use, especially in windy conditions. Always wear a lifejacket on board.
Let's make safety our top priority while enjoying our boating adventures. Wear your lifejacket, get trained, and be prepared. Have a safe and enjoyable time on the water!
