National Drowning Prevention Week: July 16 - 22July 17, 2023 Supervise Children:Did you know that the majority of drownings in children under 5 years of age occur due to a lack of supervision? Drowning is fast and silent, often happening in less than 30 seconds. That's why it's crucial for guardians to watch their children closely while they're in the water and avoid distractions - keep your eyes on your kids, not on your phone. Remember these important water safety tips:- Stay within arm's reach! Always be within arm's reach of young children when they're in or near the water.
- Unattended toddlers are at high risk because they're mobile, curious, and require constant supervision. Keep a close watch on them at all times.
- While lifejackets and flotation devices provide an extra layer of protection, they should never replace adult supervision.
Backyard Pool Safety:- Private backyard pools are where children aged 1-4 years most commonly drown. It's crucial to discuss backyard pool safety and take preventive measures.
- Designate a responsible adult as the "backyard pool lifeguard" and provide direct supervision.
- Store water toys away after swimming to discourage children from returning to the pool unsupervised.
- Ensure your backyard pool is designed for safety, with multiple layers of protection like self-closing gates and fences to control and restrict access. Remember your hot tubs, swimming pools and spas require a development permit.
