From May 2 to June 26, 2022, the pool at the Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre will be closed for cleaning and maintenance work.
Pool shutdown is an annual occurrence that keeps your pool healthy and functional, and helps minimize maintenance related service impacts throughout the year.
In recent years, you may not have noticed this work taking place as we maximized the opportunity to complete it when the Rec Centre was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 (March 13 to September 14, 2020; December 13, 2020, to January 21, 2021; and May 8 to June 14, 2021).
While the facility was closed, both the Aquatic and Maintenance teams worked diligently to accomplish as much work as they could to mitigate closures once the Town was able to reopen to the public.
This year’s shutdown is taking place in spring because some of the major maintenance tasks scheduled require warmer temperatures to complete. Additional planned preventative work also needs to be completed to ensure service interruptions are limited going forward into the summer months.
Major mechanical work planned for the 2022 pool shutdown includes:
- Make Up Air Unit (MAU) work (this unit provides the pool deck with tempered fresh air)
- Mechanical Room work, including the servicing of boilers and heat exchangers, and some electrical, piping and insulation work (these systems serve a portion of the Recreation Centre beyond the pool)
- Sand Vessel replacement (filters that use sand to filter the impurities out of the water)
- Main pool expansion seam and cap inspections and potential replacement of the seam
Please note there will be periodic interruptions to the Recreation Centre’s hot water supply. Signage will be posted around the building when these are taking place.
During shutdown, Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre passholders can use their passes to swim at the Jasper Fitness & Aquatic Centre and Edson & District Leisure Centre. Annual passholders automatically receive an additional month on their pass upon purchase which covers the pool shutdown period. We recognize that shutdown is scheduled to be longer this year and passes affected will be assessed accordingly.
For questions about passes, call the Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre Customer Service desk at 780-865-4412. For additional information on upcoming pool programming, please connect with Alexa McEachern, Aquatic Supervisor at 780-740-8063 or
