Hinton RCMP Investigating Fraudulent Telephone Calls
Hinton, Alta – Hinton RCMP have received several complaints involving fraudulent telephone scams. Individuals claiming to be from Service Canada or Revenue Canada have been calling local residents. The details of each phone call change slightly; however, the callers will often provide a name and “badge” number. The victim is then told they need to provide personal details such as their SIN (Social Insurance Number), date of birth, address, or banking information. Some scams involve the victims being threatened with arrest, or that they need to provide this information due to “suspicious activities” involving their personal information. Do not provide your personal information.

If you suspect you may be the victim of fraud, contact your local police service. You can also ask for help from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
Report the theft of your Social Insurance Number (SIN) by contacting Service Canada at 1-866-274-6627.
