[ARCHIVED] Town of Hinton Pursues Sustainable Fleet with Electric Vehicle Purchase

Town of Hinton Pursues Sustainable Fleet with Electric Vehicle Purchase
The Town of Hinton is advancing its commitment to sustainability by exploring the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into its municipal fleet. In a progressive move, Administration undertook a thorough assessment, in partnership with ATCO, to determine the viability of transitioning to EVs as a cleaner and cost-effective alternative.
To pursue a more sustainable future, the Town of Hinton has allocated $45,000 in its 2022 budget to purchase an electric van. However, mindful of the need for further information and potential government grants, the decision to acquire the EV was temporarily deferred. A noteworthy development was the successful securing of a $14,000 grant for this endeavour, thanks to the diligent work of the Town Administration.
Initially, the EV van's arrival was anticipated in January 2024, aligning with the Town's 2024 budget and the grant stipulations. However, in an exciting turn of events, the EV van has arrived sooner than expected, prompting the need to accelerate the decision-making process. On September 5th, 2023, at a Regular Council meeting, Council directed Administration to purchase the EV transit Van Griffith’s Ford.
Reflecting on this pivotal decision, Director of Development and Infrastructure Services Trent McLaughlin stated, "Embracing electric vehicles aligns with our mission of capturing sustainable opportunities and advances Hinton towards a cleaner, greener future. This decision reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible asset management."
This project was part of the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program administered by MCCAC and was funded in part by the Government of Alberta. The Town of Hinton continues to explore innovative solutions in its quest for a more sustainable future. This endeavour underscores the town's dedication to sustainability, fiscal responsibility, and community welfare. Hinton stands at the forefront of environmental responsibility, paving the way for a cleaner and brighter tomorrow.
