Community Engagement & Advisory Committee Disbanded

The Town of Hinton’s Community Engagement & Advisory Committee (CEAC) has been disbanded, and the Town would like to extend a sincere thank you to the many Hintonites who served on the Committee and contributed to Council decisions over the years.

CEAC, a group of citizen volunteers empowered by Hinton Town Council, was formed in 2011 to help the flow of feedback from, and information to, town residents on different issues, and be an advisory committee to Council. CEAC filled a void that was left when several advisory groups dissolved, and the Committee worked hard to help develop the Community Sustainability Plan (CSP) as well as monitor the Town’s progress to accomplish CSP goals.

Since CEAC’s inception, the Town has expanded community engagement practices, including creating additional advisory committees to conduct public engagement and provide advice to Council, such as the Beaver Boardwalk Community Oversight Committee and the Hinton Youth Advisory Council. Members of Council also participate on other boards and committees in the community, either as delegates of Council or as interested community members, returning information to Council debates.

As well, the Town’s public engagement capabilities have expanded and improved dramatically since the creation of CEAC. The Town has invested in various survey software, an online engagement portal, virtual meeting subscriptions, streaming services, and social media platforms, all while continuing to host open houses and other in-person engagement opportunities.

Hence, following Council’s October 18, 2022, decision to rescind the CSP due to its aged strategies and actions, Council moved to disband CEAC on December 20, 2022.

Mayor Marcel Michaels said at the December 20, 2022, Regular Council Meeting, “I think this is an opportunity for us to better redirect our energy and priorities. There was a time and place for CEAC, and I think there will be opportunities in the future that will lend themselves to Council and we will look at that.

“I would like to thank all the past members and Administration for bringing this along and I look forward to a different future.”
