The Beaver Boardwalk is a community asset that is a highly valued recreational destination by both residents and tourists. This outdoor infrastructure, which was a grassroots initiative, provides the opportunity to experience our local wetland and get close to wildlife natural habitat. In the time since West Fraser Mills Ltd. sponsored the construction in 2006 of this Beaver Boardwalk to commemorate the 50th anniversary of West Fraser's Hinton operation and the Town of Hinton, weather conditions, frequent use, and landscape changes have weathered and damaged portions of the boardwalk.
A number of areas have been closed off due to unsafe conditions. Please view the photos for further information, as well as the map provided for planning visits to the area.
The Beaver Boardwalk closure was prompted by correspondence with the Town of Hinton’s insurance and legal counsel. It was determined that due to failing infrastructure (either compromised pilings or portions submerged in water) that a closure provided due diligence to public safety. Other areas will be monitored as the thaw continues.
At this time the Town is preparing an application for Water Act Approval on work required on the boardwalk. Once we have an understanding of AEP Water Act Approval process requirements and timeframes we will communicate timelines and next steps.
