Switzer Drive Water Main Upgrade – Phase l and ll
The Water Distribution System Master Plan identifies that the existing water lines in this area (designed in the 1950’s) have inefficient pumping capacity to meet the “peak day” water demands and adequate fire flows to the west part of the Mountain View area. This project supports future phasing of the water lines along Gregg Avenue to Terrace Heights (as development occurs).
In order to bring the system up to today’s standards, upgrades are required to the existing water lines and replacing the mechanical system within the Switzer Pumphouse. This project has been undertaken in two phases:
Phase l was completed 2010. This phase focused on replacing and upgrading the water lines on Switzer Drive from the intersection of Pembina Avenue to Highway 16.
Phase ll remains in progress. This phase focuses on:
- replacing the water line on Gregg Avenue from the East crossing the Switzer Drive intersection to the corner (FasGas corner).
- boring and installing an encased watermain line under the CN railroad and Highway 16.
- installation of natural gas line under the CN railroad and Highway 16 that will allow the Switzer Pumphouse system to operate in the event of a power outage.
- upgrading and replacing the mechanical system of the Switzer Pumphouse.
The installation of the water lines and restoration of the road surface was completed in November, 2011. The contractor will be on site in spring of 2012 to complete deficiencies, reinstate the pedestrian trail and seeding of the slope along Highway 16.
The upgrades and mechanical replacements being made to the Switzer Pumphouse are currently in progress.
